COURSE INTRODUCTION
As part of English Language, we must be able to comment thoughtfully and accurately on the choices writers make, identifying the kinds of words, features and devices a writer is using and how they affect the reader. In this course, we will recap the ways writers use lexical choices, figurative techniques and auditory techniques to create meaning.
Topics covered in this short course include:
- Word classes
- Connotations of words, tone and semantic fields
- Figurative techniques including similes, metaphors, personification, pathetic fallacy and oxymoron
- Auditory techniques including repetition/anaphora, alliteration, sibilance and onomatopoeia
